How heavy is heavy, really?

"How difficult is difficult, really?"
This question keeps coming up, when browsing my site, in messages from you, or in chats at the weekly market.
And I think: It's an absolutely legitimate question!
Because what's a cozy TV evening for an experienced knitter or crocheter can look like a mathematical emergency plan for someone picking up a needle for the first time.
👉 That's why Fräulein Gerda now has an honest and practical difficulty compass for all knitting and crochet patterns.
Why have difficulty levels at all?
Admittedly: life is sometimes complicated enough, and when knitting or crocheting, you just want to relax. But that's exactly what the difficulty levels are for:
So you know beforehand whether you're tackling your project with a cup of tea on the sofa, or rather with a clear head and a notepad.
I have categorized all the patterns on my site into five levels – for both knitting and crocheting.
And don't worry: This isn't a performance system. You can make beautiful things even at Level 1. And if you overestimate yourself? Then you just unravel it, that's part of it!
Crochet - One yarn, one hook, endless possibilities
Crocheting is like knitting without obligations:
Just you, your yarn, and a single hook – that's all you need to create a small work of art from a few chain stitches.
Whether you're just trying to hold the crochet hook correctly, or you're already magically creating complex amigurumis in your sleep, the question will eventually arise when crocheting: "How difficult is difficult, really?"
That's why you'll find my personal level compass here too, so you know exactly whether you can start relaxed or if you'd rather prepare tea and comfort food first.

★☆☆☆☆ – You're holding a crochet hook for the first time
Chain stitch, single crochet, and a lot of patience.
First projects? Coasters, simple pot holders, small moments of joy.
★★☆☆☆ – Double crochet, half double crochet, simple shapes
You can already do a bit "more": hats, dishcloths with texture, first attempts in rounds.
And you know: the yarn does what it wants, and so do you.
★★★☆☆ – Color changes, patterns, spirals
This is where it gets exciting: granny squares, first amigurumis, small patterns, and first charts.
This is the level where you want to crochet "just one more round" at night. (Spoiler: It's never just one round)
★★★★☆ – Reading crochet charts, construction projects, combinations
You know how a crochet pattern works and how to read it: large projects made of several parts, bags, blankets, cardigans, anything that fits together like a yarn puzzle.
★★★★★ – Filet crochet, complex patterns, amigurumi masterpieces
You're the crochet boss: finest techniques, intricate details, projects where others just say "Wow!" and you say, "Oh, that was just the weekend."
Knitting – what you should know
Knitting is meditative, creative – and sometimes a bit like Sudoku with wool.
Whether you're just figuring out what knit and purl stitches are, or you're already whipping up entire sweaters from your sleeve (or ball of yarn). Even with knitting, you'll eventually honestly ask yourself: "How difficult is difficult, really?"
That's why you'll also find your personal knitting compass here. Without jargon, but with a lot of heart and humor. So you know which project suits your current knitting self and when you can confidently dare to pick up a cable needle.

★☆☆☆☆ – You're picking up knitting needles for the first time
Welcome to the wonderful world of stitches!
This is where it starts: knit and purl stitches, simple projects like headbands, scarves, or pot holders.
★★☆☆☆ – Casting on, knit and purl stitches
You know the basics, can knit rows, and are no longer afraid of tangled yarn.
Perfect for: hats, cowls with ribs, simple textures for practicing and marveling.
★★★☆☆ – Yarn overs, knitting stitches together, first patterns
Now some technique comes into play: first lace patterns, simple shaping, a bit more counting, but all very manageable.
Perhaps the level where you first feel like a "real" knitter.
★★★★☆ – Socks, simple cable patterns, brioche
You're ready for: heels (yay!), first cables, brioche patterns, and exciting textures.
A great level to be proud of. You'll notice: Now you dare to do more!
★★★★★ – Fair Isle, complex cable patterns
Here you need courage, concentration, and perhaps some chocolate within reach: multi-color knitting, elaborate patterns,
complex instructions and charts.
But also: incredibly beautiful results. And honestly: Anyone who knits a Fair Isle pattern can feel like the queen of needles for a moment.
The most important thing at the end: It's not about "being able," but about getting started
These levels are guidelines, not rules. You are always allowed to try, exaggerate, fail, and start over. That's the beauty of handicrafts. Every stitch is a new beginning. And if you ever see a project and think: "Phew... how difficult is that, really?"
Then you'll know from now on: it depends. On you. Your day. Your mood. Your yarn. And sometimes it's just nice to knit only knit stitches – no matter how good you are.
Curious? Then browse through my patterns and find a project that appeals to you, regardless of the level. And if you don't know where you stand – you can always write to me.
Because: "How difficult is difficult, really?" We'll figure that out best together.
Yours, Bianca
