What a knitting or crochet pattern REALLY costs

First, make yourself comfortable on the sofa with a hot cup of tea and your needles. Before we dive deep into the matter, we need to talk about something that has been buzzing around in my head after a confusing Instagram moment and many sleepless nights.
Recently, I read the charming sentence under a post (though, let’s be honest: it’s not the first time): "Charging money for this is outrageous." Phew. I had to swallow, count my stitches, and take a deep breath. Because, hand on heart: when a well-developed knitting or crochet pattern is available in the shop for a few euros, some people flinch for a moment. Yet, hidden behind it is a whole iceberg of work that you simply don’t see at first glance, and the hostility that we designers in the craft world have to face regularly (not to mention the accusation of "stealing ideas") doesn’t make things any easier.
Time for an honest tea chat: What does a handicraft pattern actually cost to produce – and why have I now pulled the ripcord?
The invisible path: What happens before the pattern becomes digital?
A pattern doesn't just pop out of thin air into the shop while I sleep at night (I wish!). Before you hold a clear PDF in your hands, a lot of heart and soul, tea, and brainpower go into it. This is what the creative marathon at Fräulein Gerda looks like:
- Idea & Design Development: Every project starts with at least 10 ideas in my head (of which at least 9 are discarded; in most cases, nothing of the initial idea remains), then it continues with sketches, cuts, and the dream of the perfect stitch pattern.
- Yarn Marathon: Which yarn harmonizes perfectly with the design? I test different yarns and compositions until everything fits.
- Math Excess (for garments): Swatches are knitted and meticulously calculated for all sizes. My calculator really glows!
- Test working & own test rounds: Before anyone else picks up the needles, I intensively test the design myself. These time-consuming rounds aren't even included in the following hours! Then follow the test rounds with my wonderful test knitters to iron out even the last stumbling block (often 2-3 rounds).
- Layout & Photos: The feedback from the testers is incorporated, photos are taken (from this point on, my husband has to help out too), and a pretty layout is designed.
- Support: And often years after the purchase, when a stitch gets stuck somewhere.
Let's do the math: The real value and the platform trap
If we add up all these steps, we are talking about a significant amount of work. On average, each pattern contains 30 to 80+ hours of pure craftsmanship and organization (as mentioned: not even counting my own test knitting).
Let’s do a reality check and calculate it soberly using the legal minimum wage of 13.90 euros per hour:
- At 30 hours of work, the pure labor value is a proud 417 euros.
- At 80 hours, we land at a whopping 1,112 euros (each completely without material costs!).
And now let's compare that to a regular pattern price of about 6.50 euros:
Without deductions, that means
- 109 sales for my minimum effort
- 291 sales for the higher effort
But now comes the real problem: The platform trap, the tax annoyance, and the actual operating costs.
When I sell my patterns via large platforms, they take hefty fees, sometimes up to 30%. In addition, there is the issue of VAT: although I am not liable for VAT as a small business owner and technically wouldn't have to show it, many of these platforms retain the VAT anyway.
As soon as these items are deducted, my profit per copy sold shrinks massively.
In plain language, this means: The number of patterns I have to sell just to cover my costs increases drastically.
And even if this hurdle is cleared? Then, with a lot of luck, I have just covered the costs, but there is no question of "making a living." Because out of what is left, income tax must eventually be paid as well. Plus, there are running costs like electricity, expensive design and graphics programs, unexpected expenses (when the laptop gives up the ghost again), or investments in the YouTube studio so that I can finally explain techniques and steps in videos even better and more understandably.
On top of that, many patterns simply never reach these sales numbers on platforms, or only after years. In the end, it’s pure love for the hobby and design, but economically an absolute tightrope walk.
Why I am pulling the ripcord now
My own shop has been online since May and is still very fresh, and for good reason. Before, almost everything I did went through large marketplaces.
I still use some external platforms because many international customers are active there, and at this point, an exciting difference becomes apparent: international customers are often much more open to the value of a pattern and pay fair prices as a matter of course. In the German-speaking world, however, I unfortunately experience the exact opposite. Here, the hesitation or even criticism regarding price is often extremely high.
At the end of the month, there was hardly anything left of the small amount. Anyone who wants to run a business fairly as a designer and live from their own work can no longer look away under these conditions. The math no longer worked out, and I had to pull the ripcord.
Where you buy makes a real difference!
That is precisely why this point is the heart of the whole topic and my biggest concern for you: It is in your hands!
When you buy your patterns directly here in my shop and not via the large platforms, you are making a conscious decision. You are making a real, noticeable difference for me as a designer:
- Your money lands where the work was done: It doesn't flow into the pockets of anonymous portals, but directly to where the needles glow and the work was invested.
- You keep the craft alive: Only when fair conditions are worthwhile can we designers continue to spend hours and weeks tinkering on perfect, error-free patterns.
- You show genuine appreciation: You support the direct path without middlemen enriching themselves from our creative work.
Thank you very much for looking closer, seeing the value behind our needles, and supporting my work so incredibly much.
In this spirit: Make yourself comfortable, grab your needles, and let’s make the handicraft world a little fairer.
