Knitting scrunchies

The nineties are back on our heads and we love it!

3 scrunchies in different colors made from different wool

A hand-knitted scrunchie is the perfect mix of a stylish accessory and a quick, uncomplicated knitting project for in between. Whether used as a colorful accent in a bun, worn casually on your wrist, or as a quick, thoughtful gift for your loved ones, these voluminous hair ties are simply addictive.

The best part? You don't need to buy any new yarn for it. Your new favorite accessory is the ultimate project to make good use of even the smallest treasures from your scrap bin. If you can knit stockinette stitch in the round, this won't be a problem for you.

You will need:

  • Hair-friendly yarn scraps (if using thin yarn, feel free to use it double)
  • Matching double-pointed needles or a short circular needle (5.0 mm)
  • A real hair tie (without metal parts)
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle

Instructions

  • Cast on 50 stitches and join in the round
  • Knit 20 rounds of stockinette stitch
  • Turn the work inside out and place it over the hair tie
  • Lift the first stitch of the cast-on row onto the left needle and knit it together with the first stitch on the needle through the back loop
  • Repeat once and pull the right stitch on the right needle over the left stitch. Repeat this step for the entire round
  • Weave in the yarn end

Frequently Asked Questions

Which yarn is suitable for scrunchies?

Perhaps you have heard that wool is not good for your hair. That is true for very rustic, rough virgin wool, which can rub against the hair and contribute to split ends. With the right yarn choice, however, your scrunchie will become an absolute hair-friendly delight! It is best to reach for super-fine merino wool (with superwash treatment), soft cotton, bamboo viscose, or elegant blends with a silk content. These fibers are extremely smooth and glide gently over your hair.

Which needle size is best for knitting scrunchies?

That depends on the yarn used. It is important that it doesn't get too stiff, so it is better to use a needle half a size larger than recommended.

Can I also mix different yarn scraps in one scrunchie?

Yes, absolutely! That is actually a fantastic idea for a cool look. You can knit colorful stripes, elaborate patterns, or simply use the yarn double. This creates beautiful and completely unique color effects, textures, and ideas.
