PDF Knitting Pattern
This project is like a little journey back in time for me. I wanted to capture the feeling of entering a place that has been hidden for decades. The Lost Gardens of Heligan are exactly such a "secret garden". Knitting almost feels like an exploration. You start with an Italian cast-on and knit the cuff in a classic 2-knit-2-purl pattern. While the main pattern is reminiscent of delicate, Victorian ornaments, the two-color cables on the left and right frame the whole thing like old, artfully intertwined paths. It's not a project to "knit without thinking", but that's exactly what makes it so appealing. I knitted a heart heel here, but you can also knit any other heel you like.
The meaning of the name
Behind the name is a true story that deeply touched me. The Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall fell into a deep slumber after World War I and were only rediscovered and painstakingly restored in the 1990s. I wanted to capture this mixture of Victorian garden art and an almost magical, mysterious atmosphere. Although the pattern is floral, its symmetry makes it look more like an elegant embellishment from another era. Just like a garden waiting to be brought back to life by you.
